I have found out that there are many advantages that digital slr cameras over a point and shoot when you start to get serious about the quality of the pictures that you're taking Over the last 2 years I have become very fond of taking a pictures, it started with cell phone then I moved on to a small Kodak compact digital camera that was a Father's Day gift. When you start taking a lot of pictures, you begin to notice their quality (or lack of it), especially when you have quality shots from a superior camera to compare them with. When you start to analyze the type of shots that you are producing and how it can be made better that when you realize that photography may be something that you can really like

A good friend of mine make a living as a wedding photographer. He often gives me the technical reason why his pictures where better that mine. "I'm a great photographer and I paid $3,200 for a equally great camera, so it better take quality pictures than that gift wrap piece of Father's Day $100 present you got"

I'm not a professional photographer nor do I have that calling. I just wanted a better piece of equipment that take professional looking pictures as well as high definition (HD) movies. When I go on vacation I want the place that I'm visiting look like it does as I see it and more importantly I want pictures nice enough to show off. A camera that I can control instead of the other way around. But I'm not paying anywhere near $3,000 for one either, This is a budding hobby for me. A way to meet new friends (sometimes pretty girls will let you take their pictures if you ask them properly- sometimes.)

I really don't see the small point and shoot cameras lasting to long as a future camera. Two years ago my niece was the type of person that always carried a camera with her everywhere she went. I mean the girl takes picture of everything (sometimes annoying but what can you do?) today you'll never see that old camera with her.

Why?

She has a blackberry now and can take the type of pictures that she wants, post them to facebook, flickr and all around the wed without having to take the extra step of loading it to her computer. Is the quality any better? No. Not with only a couple of megapixels and no control over the outcome of the picture, but it's perfect for a computer analyst and mother who just wants to take some pictures of her kid as he learns how to swim. Smartphone cameras have made it so easy that even my sister who is technology challenged can take a decent photo every now and then So in my opinion Mr. Eastman's original design is going the way of the Sony Walkman

There was a time that dslr camera did not have video like the smaller compact cameras but today not only does a slr have video, but it's quite good - Now you can get quality high definition so you can make good looking home movies. This is the reason why great video production can be seen on the Internet and with low budget films- dslr's are becoming the camera of choice for many independent film makers who cannot spring for higher costing camera equipment

I know that if I didn't have a friend that was a wedding photographer, I would have been
blown away by all of the different choices that exist when buying my digital slr. I like taking pictures of people and events and often these things go hand in hand and occur at night. So I wanted a camera that had the ability to take good clear pictures when the light is dimmer without using a flash and the capability to preview and compose a shot before I took it, and this camera does that big time. Nikon sell this camera as an entry level slr and I think they've done a good job

But I like to think that at a certain price point most of today's slr are pretty good I know that the technology gap between an expensive professional camera and an affordable one has narrowed a bit (and the price between a compact digital camera and a lower price, good quality slr is even smaller). I chose the Nikon not only because of all of the super technical features- but because of all the positive reviews at Amazon and other well knownsites. Still, I'd be just as happy with a Canon EOS (a little more pricey) or Pentax at this point in my hobby's
evolution

Because there are so many quality cameras on the market, the question of the best one really depends on how you personally intend to use it. What do you usually take pictures of? Do you enjoy shooting landscapes or maybe sunsets at the beach?. Then you will want a camera that image stabilization . Or do you enjoy sporting events like football, or a little league baseball games then a digital slr that has auto focus and is high speed to quickly capture the action clearly is your concern. For me, a lot of the photos I take are in low lighting situations so I concentrated on a camera that has high ISO settings with decent live view to compose the picture. When you know what you like to take pictures of the most then the choices start to become a little less confusing

I chose the Nikon for Four reasons:

1. The camera has features that accommodate the kind of pictures that I like to take. I can   compose a  picture and get a solid idea of how it will look before I take the shot

2 There were a lot of positive reviews on Amazon as well as a recommendation from my friend and the local camera store.

3 Nikon is a well known brand name

4 High quality camera at a good price. I got more bang for my buck

One of the other cameras that I considered buying was a Canon EOS and it too is an awesome camera with more mega-pixels and is very good at low level lighting. The LCD screen is big and that helps especially if your like me and you wear glass you'll find that there is big difference in a screen that 3" and one that is only 2.5" . I have seen a friend of mine take a video outside in the evening with it and the quality of the picture was absolutely stunning. If you are the type of person that likes taking pictures of football or basketballthen this is the camera for you


If you like to take occasional pictures of the kids in the swimming pool or friends at a barbecue than you probably better off just staying with a point and shoot camera or save your money and just use your cell phone. But when you want to take better pictures and you start to get a little more serious about the quality, then get yourself a good digital slr camera
